Wrapping It Up

Some of the insanity of the last 3 months is starting to wind down. I feel like I have hardly been at home. School wraps up in 2 1/2 weeks and everyone is looking forward to it. The layout from above is from last year. Hopefully we have a nice hot summer so we can do lots of this, picnics and being generally lazy. Crossing my fingers!

Craving Summer

Even though the weather is slowly getting warmer here, I am dying for summer to officially maker her appearance. In the meanwhile, I am having a wonderful time with the Fly a Kite line by October Afternoon (in stock at Scrapbooker's Club House, by the way). It has some vintage-y patterns and the colours are phenomenal. Sigh. Oh, summer, come back soon!

Changes

It is with a heavy heart that I decided to resign from the Journaling Junkie Design Team. It was a tough decision. JJ is really close to my heart as I have been there since it started over 2 years ago. Stephanie is a dream to work with but I have been feeling quite overwhelmed over the last few months. Between running my own business, taking care of 2 very active kids, a husband and a household along with volunteer work, I was starting to feel burnt out. I wish Stephanie and the rest of the JJ team all the best. You ladies rock!!! Thank you for having me all this time.

Looking back...

A friend of mine sent me this picture of my daughter that was taken 5 years ago. She was a petite 3 years old then and on this night she was going to perform onstage for the first time. My poor little ballerina was terrified! It is funny how much she has blossomed since then. I guess that's why I love scrapbooking. It helps me not forget those little things that would otherwise slip away.

I always have a bit of trouble doing layouts about myself because I don't actually have many pictures of me. So I end up posing and looking a little like I have a stick up my butt! LOL I gues this is what happens when you are used to being behind the camera, as opposed to in front of it. Anyway, this layout was done in conjunction with Journaling Junkie and talking about pet peeves. You know, those little things that get under your skin. Looking at this now, it reminds me of an important lesson: don't sweat the small stuff.

It's Still Rock 'n' Roll To Me....

...or it might be jazz or classical or...well, some kind of music! I have loved, LOVED music for as long as I can remember so I quite enjoyed this Journaling Junkie challenge. Rather than making a list of favorite cd's or something like that, I journaled about music makes me feel. And it makes me feel a lot. I can get totally lost in a song. For someone that lives in her head quite often, music is a wonderful escape from my worries and stresses. What does music do for you?

Sketch Contest

I am getting more and more into card making. It takes way less time than a layout and it's so satisfying! Pink Persimmon is having a blog hop sketch challenge and I thought I would take part. I adore sketches big time! The top 3 cards use just the sketch as inspiration while and bottom have the additional elements of paper piecing (my gingerbreadman) and flowers and buttons on the last one. Thanks for looking!

Wrong Era

Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong era. I would have been right at home somewhere in the 1930's-1950's. I am much more conservative than most of my friends, I believe in marriage first, "Gone with the Wind" is one of my favorite movies of all time, I enjoy old jazz and big band and love cool retro stuff. I mean, look at that cute polka dot vintage-inspired bikini! Course, I don't actually have the confidence to wear one but it's sooooo darling. And look at these:

I totally love them! And, yes, I actually enjoy being in the kitchen too. Hardly a surprise, eh? Sigh. Where is that time machine?

What's Your Talent?

The current Journaling Junkie talent focuses on personal talents. I found this challenge to be really hard. I don't really feel that I am great at anything. Kinda average all across the board. It comes from a childhood of never being encouraged, never having my confidence built up, always being compared to the kid who was better, never feeling like I was quite enough. My family meant well, they just didn't want me getting a "swell head" but what happened was that I ended up feeling like a nobody. So for this challenge I had to ask my dh what he thought I was good at. He said I am a good food photographer so I went with that. He pointed out that even some of the kind folks at Food Network Canada have commented on my photos. So that's what I ran with. Our current Journaling Junkie challenge is to write a love letter to someone you care about (spouse, child, friend, whoever it may be) to let him/her know how special they are to you, in honor of Valentine's Day. The twist is that you are to use nontraditional colours and embellishments so no pink/red and hearts. Sound fun? It is! Head on over to JJ and check it out. The DT has been really stepping it up for this one and baring their hearts. I especially love Shayne's which was just posted today. Such inspiration!

I have been in card making mode this week and the card above was the first one I've done in a long time. There's no sentiment on it but I think it turned out pretty cute and gave me a chance to get my Cuttlebug out. :0) I love the embossing folders for it. I wish I had more!

One Word

This week, let’s play along with Journaling Junkie (I’ve been on the DT there since it started 2 years ago and it’s a wonderful place!). The challenge is to choose a word for 2009 and do one of the following:
(1) explain your choice of word for 2009, and it’s importance and significance to you OR
(2) choose a new word for 2010, giving your reasons and maybe how you intend to implement it, how you are going to remind yourself of your word etc OR
(3) if choosing a word really doesn’t fill you with inspiration then a review of the year that was.
Here is my layout:

The journaling reads: My word for 2010 is “finish”. Beginnings can be exciting but so are endings, especially when you can look back and see how far you’ve come. I need to prioritize and complete what I set out to do. Things like finish 1/2 done projects, end hurtful relationships, quit engaging in self-defeating behaviour.
Then maybe I will find the clean slate I am looking for.

I would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and year full of blessings in 2010! This has been a very turbulent year for me with several deaths in our family, including my dear father in law. He will be very much missed. We had struggles with health, big changes professionally, and the loss of some friendships. 2009 certainly wasn't boring! LOL I am very hopeful that next year will bring good things for all of us so raise your glass with me and wish each other well! :0)

I have had to make some difficult decisions about Scrapbooker's Club House and how it is going to be run. One of the things I have decided to do is close the forum and gallery. I am really going to miss some people there that I have gotten to know pretty well over the years. Some I won't miss like the nasty opportunists who took my announcement as their cue to plug about their own sites. Gee, don't kick me while I'm down or anything!

In any case, the store is not going anywhere and neither is the Scrapbooker's Club House blog. Speaking of which, there is a super sale going on right now so be sure to check out the details here.

Journaling Junkie Challenge #70

One of the things I hate about myself is that I can be severely critical of people. Thankfully I was raised well enough that I keep my inner thoughts to myself (at least most of the time!). It's not a trait I am proud of and I really wish I wasn't such a nitpicker. I'm sure I would enjoy people more if I didn't think most of them were idiots. Oh dear...that wasn't my "inside voice" was it?

Fall brings to my mind changes in the leaves, crispness in the air and for some reason dances! School dances, Halloween dances and Christmas parties are on people’s minds this time of year. What came to my mind this fall is Elegance. I live in a small community where blue jeans and hooded sweaters are nearly a way of life. Sometimes I dream of the glitz and glamour of having a stunning, sequined ball gown, fashionable, slinky high heels and a man in a stunning tuxedo and best of all…..a place to go to dance the night away! This is where the idea of the Fall Ball Crop comes from.

I can not believe I have been with Journaling Junkie for 61 challenges! Wow!! The newest challenge is this:

Be inspired by this nursery rhyme:1,2 tie my shoe3,4 shut the door5,6 pick up sticks7,8 lay them straight9,10 a big fat hen. There should be something laced in the LO (to correspond to the tie my shoe). Shut the door, picking up the sticks and laying them straight can mean "recovering from something or making something in your life/self right on track" (like "picking up the pieces metaphor"). A big fat hen can mean a prize or something you look forward to when you do that recovery or picking up.

Let's Stamp it Up!

One of the things I really like about designing for Simon Says Stamp is that I am "forced" (in a good way) to try things that I don't normally do. With the stamp set I got this month (see it here), I did a lot of background stamping, kind of like creating your own pattern paper. I used some older kit paper I got from Scrapbooker's Club House and I think the cards turned out really nicely. I challenge you to do the same and get those stamps out!

Jumping For Joy

One of the nice things that happened at the end of last year was I got accepted on the Design Team at Simon Says Stamp! I can not tell you how floored I was. I had just finished my term with Creatively Yours when I saw the call for SSS. I applied thinking I had a snowball's chance in you-know-where of actually making it. I was beyond thrilled when I got my email announcing I had made the team. I had wanted to work for a manufacturer for a long time so this was a real dream come true.
Here are my samples using their cute stamp set called Frogs Jumping for Joy. On the last 2 samples here, I used the Scrapbooker's Club House Home grown kit which I think is great with this set.

What a month!

The New Year is off to an extremely bad start. We had two deaths in the family and my poor dh had to go have surgery to remove his appendix. To say that I feel depressed and frazzled is an understatement.

But life does go on and I did manage to get some scrapbooking time in. Here is what I made for Scrapbooker's Club House with their Homegrown kit.

I can't believe I haven't updated this blog in so long but that goes to show how busy December was. Completely and utterly insane. I barely had time to scrapbook. Now how could I ever have let that happen??? So far January is not much better. I am adjusting to getting back into the weekly routines for myself and the kids and hopefully Mr. Mojo will be back in the house soon! The above is my last layout for Creatively Yours. For this last hurrah, we were able to pick whatever sketch we wanted. The big brackets on Sketch 39 really inspired me and I love how this shaped layout turned out (btw, the white background is my clipboard, not paper). Holy smokes! I didn't realize how long it had been since I did a blog update. Shame on me! I have been busily creating for 3 design teams and with how sick the kids had been through September and October, I was feeling a little overwhelmed.

Yes, I am trudging along in my Disney album but slow and steady wins the race, right? The first layout, Seeing Stars, was created using one of Noella's fun sketches at Creatively Yours (see sidebar for link). The California Screamin' layout was designed for one of the Scrapbooker's Club House Scrappy Island challenges. You needed to use fabric which I did with the yellow curve on the left hand side. The challenges have beeen fun and unique (have you ever painted with a leaf or grass??) so come check it out!

Another Disney Album

Scrapbooker’s Club House has a fun contest this month! We challenge you to design and submit up to 2 bookmarks for this contest. Bookmarks will be judged by a Librarian and the prize for our winner will be YOUR CHOICE of a back issue of Canadian Scrapbooker magazine, mailed right to your door!!

Here are the rules:

1. Contest runs from August 13-24, 2008.

2. A winner will be chosen and announced on August 25th, 2008

3. Bookmarks can be NO LARGER than 10”x 2.5” each.

4. You can create and enter a maximum of two (2) bookmarks.

5. You must use all of the following products, and ONLY these, in creating your bookmark: -cardstock -patterned paper from your scrap pile: please don’t cut into a new piece! -stamps/ink -buttons -chipboard

6. In creating your entry, please remember that the bookmark must be functional! ie: it must be able to be used as a BOOKMARK in a bound book or magazine.

I will be the first to admit I am not the best card maker but I am pretty happy with this one. It was done using Card Sketch #9 from Creatively Yours, by Noella. I flipped the original sketch sideways, used floral paper instead of flowers in the middle section, and gave it a bit of unique opening by using scallop scissors 2/3 across, instead of making the ends meets like you usually see on cards! Thanks for the great sketch, Noella!

P.S. This card was created with the Garden Party kit from Scrapbooker's Club House with the addition of the Heidi swapp hearts.

Stella, the owner, had to step down for personal reasons but I am so thankful that fellow DT member, Stefanie, will be taking over the reins.
